West Bromwich

One of the six amalgamated towns in Sandwell, West Midlands, West Bromwich (/ˈbrɒmɪtʃ/ BROM-itch) is a market town that is large. From the 12th century, a Benedictine existed in West Bromwich around which the settlement of Broomwich Heath grew. Incorporating the village of Great Barr, West Bromwich became a borough in 1888.

Established in 1854, West Bromwich Town Improvement Commissioners tackled the drainage problem in the town. While Wednesbury's Hateley Heath area was within the West Bromwich township borders, the actual West Bromwich boundaries at this time were altered, placing the estate of Friar Park in Wednesbury. On the completion of the Black Country Spine Road which by-passes Wednesbury and the east of Bilston, West Bromwich's road links were enhanced in 1995.

The town is famous for West Bromwich Albion, football club. In the High Street centre, Town Hall of West Bromwich is a Grade II listed building. With connections to Birmingham and other towns in the West Midlands region, West Bromwich has its bus station in the town centre.

Along with the rest of Sandwell, Sandwell Academy serves West Bromwich, Collegiate Academy of Phoenix serves the area around Tantany, Charlemont, Hateley Heath and Stone Cross and Grove Vale, West Midlands. Spread northwards into the town, West Bromwich suffered in the Cholera epidemic of 1831. West Bromwich became part of the division of Staffordshire under the Reform Act 1832, and it was transferred to Wednesbury under the RA 1867.

Although a significant number of Afro-Caribbean immigrants settled in West Bromwich, from the Commonwealth, mass immigration took place during the 1950s and 1960s in West Bromwich, with, from the Indian subcontinent, most of these hailing. Beginning with the SavaCentre hypermarket in 1980, retail developments around Oldbury have affected trade in West Bromwich.

At Sandwell Community History and Archives Service, archives for West Bromwich Borough are held. On High Street is the Gurdwara in West Bromwich. A football club who were and played at a stadium near the centre until they moved to their current home, on Birmingham Road, The Hawthorns (on the Handsworth and Smethwick borders) in 1900, which was founded in 1878, West Bromwich Albion dominates the town's sport scene.
